The Veils – Nux Vomica

Posted by: benny In: Listen

London based-but NZ grounded, The Veils have been plodding on and off since early 2001. Having heard some of the earlier material, I had dismissed them (not realizing they were home grown), yet having ‘Advice for Young Mothers to Be’ slipped into one of our music groups earlier discs got me excited about listening to them again.

There is some great stories about this band, Bernard Butler produced one of their singles for “The Runaway Found”, and some fans in Japan jumped off buildings (no kidding), when they broke up in 2004, but the best part of the back story was how well received their second album ‘Nux Vormica’ was received by music press (especially the tough critics of Guardian UK, Uncut, and Pitchfork).

Need convincing? Take in ‘Calliope’ (kiwi’s might remember the bridge which was used in some TV advertising here), and ‘Advice for Young Mothers To Be’.
