Midlake – Roscoe

Posted by: benny In: Listen

Some of you may already know that I’ve spent the last few months involved in a music club with a few like-minded individuals. The premise of our music club is to introduce music to other people in the group by the way of mix CDs. Every couple of months, we exchange CD’s and spend the next month or so going over other peoples discs, making decisions about which tracks we love, and which ones we don’t. The beauty of it is that the mix CDs come with no track-listing; leaving the listener to make a decision about a track without having a pre-conceived notion about the artist.

The person deemed to have the best disc is rewarded with a music voucher, and the process starts all over again. We are only on our second disc, but I can see that this is something that I’m not going to get sick of in a hurry.

Last round, I was introduced to Midlake’s ‘Roscoe’. I didn’t really like it, in fact, I even declared my dislike for it when everyone in the group announced it to be their favourite track on ANY of the discs. Yet now I hear it and it blows my mind – every once in a while it creeps into my head and reminds me that it’s unforgettable.

The ‘Beyond The Wizards Sleeve Remix’ has some people blagging that it’s superior to the original, but for me, the real importance of the line “I wondered what if my name had changed to something more productive like, Roscoe” only comes out on the studio cut…the way Midlake intended it to.

Have a look, and see what you think….

Yeah, “Roscoe” is a great song. The other Midlake songs didn’t really grab me but when I heard that song a couple or a year a go (when did that come out?) I was immediately sold. I still play it in my car.
